What is the trekking on the Vesuvius Crater
A guided trekking route in the Vesuvius Crater, the path that winds through a series of extremely scenic switchbacks, where you can admire the ancient volcanic edifice of Monte Somma and observe from above the Valle del Gigante, rich in spectacular geological formations, native vegetation and old and new forests.
HOW THE ACTIVITY TAKES PLACE
The trekking on the Vesuvius Crater begins at the point indicated on the map, where you will meet your hiking guide, who will explain the route to be followed and instruct you on safety measures and anything else useful you will need to know before departure.
The route allows you to completely circumnavigate the Vesuvius Crater and almost all of it above 1,000 meters in elevation. During the hike your guide will explain the geological nature of the enclosure volcano layer, walking among lapilli and small minerals, among shades of color given by the various pyroclastic outcrops, dominating a landscape that sweeps over the entire Campanian Plain.
You will reach the locality of Capannuccia at an altitude of 1175m asl, where a flat stretch then begins, presenting various overlooks of the crater’s mouth, and where it is possible to admire its geological nature.
Reaching the Presidio of the Volcanological Guides you will continue downhill, on the northwestern slope of the volcano, from where you can observe from above the Atrio del Cavallo and Colle Umberto, home of the Vesuvius Volcanological Observatory, the first in Italy and founded in 1841.
