The trail is an excursion in the heart of the Vesuvius National Park and it’s among the most evocative
and complete routes to admire the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex from all points of view!
The hike starts from the square at 1000m asl at Hercolanum from which you’ll leave for the ascent to the Crater of Mount Vesuvius to reach the crater edge formed with the eruption of 1944 at 1170 m asl.
The route is particularly evocative and panoramic and has repeated views over the mouth of the crater and the Naples and Sorrento gulf.
After reaching Capannuccia continue downhill towards the Inferno Valley path that separates the Vesuvius from the ancient volcano Mount Somma.
After descending into the valley you reach first the Arena, the natural Arch and then the Levante’s Cognoli on which is located the most beautiful formation of lava “string” of Vesuvius dating back to the eruption of 1929 and engraved by a deep crevasse in which live many species of fern and in which you can enter, just as if you were in the bowels of the Earth!
The trail then continues along the Levante’s Cognoli of Somma Mountain a spectacular panoramic ascent on one of the most landscaped trails of the entire Park!
Once at the top it will be possible to descend to the valley along a steep section of lapilli and ash which leads to the Arena with the natural Arch of the Valle dell’Inferno.
From there you will then return to the starting square at 1000m, destination of itinerary.
