The trail starts at of 965m and you’ll walk in stretches of descent to flat stretches and thanks to this is the ideal route to observe the typical geological structure of the volcano-layer of Somma-Vesuvius.
The Inferno Valley separates Mount Somma from the younger volcano Vesuvius and is partly invaded by the lava of the 1900 eruptions colonized by the lichen Stereocaulon vesuvianum.
The visit to the Inferno Valley is a suggestive walk to discover the eastern side of Somma-Vesuvius where you will admire the majesty of the two volcanoes observing from below the Somma Mountain and the Vesuvius.
After a short ascent on the ridge of the Somma volcano you will see the broom and you will enjoy a spectacular landscape which overlooks the entire volcanic complex and continues on the most striking ridges of Somma Mountain where the last layer of lapilli eruption of 1944 creates suggestive perspectives on the Vesuvius with the Colle Umberto, on the Levante’s Cognoli towards the Cognoli of Ottaviano while from below you can admire the Valle del Gigante with the Valle dell’Inferno.
From the Cognoli you will descend along a steep stretch of lapilli up to the Valle dell’Inferno, sliding like on sand dunes!
From there we reconnect to the Rifugiò Imbò.
